The Journey to Thassos
Thassos is reached by ferry from the Greek mainland. There is no airport on the island. No shuttle buses. You arrive by sea, at your own pace. Two routes connect the mainland to Thassos: the short crossing from Keramoti (35 minutes to Limenas) and the longer one from Kavala city (75 minutes to Skala Prinos).
Below is a practical, honest breakdown of every step: airports, both ferry routes, driving from the Balkans, and the final stretch to Aurea Mare.
By Air: Nearest Airports
Kavala International Airport (KVA)
The closest airport, just 12 km from Keramoti port. Direct flights operate from Athens year-round, with additional European routes opening in summer. From the terminal to the ferry port, the drive takes roughly 15 minutes by car or taxi.

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG)
About 170 km from Keramoti, roughly a 2-hour drive east along the Egnatia motorway. Thessaloniki offers far more international flight options, especially outside of peak season. The motorway is straightforward, well-signed, and mostly dual carriageway.

We recommend renting a car at the airport. Thassos has no public transport worth relying on, and the freedom to explore the coastal road on your own schedule is part of the experience.
The Ferry: Keramoti to Limenas (Thassos Town)
The Keramoti to Limenas route is the fastest and most frequent connection to Thassos. This is the crossing almost everyone uses.
Crossing time: 35 minutes.
Frequency: Every 30 minutes during peak season (June to September). Every 1 to 2 hours in shoulder season.
Cost: Approximately €5 per adult, €3 per child (ages 5 to 10). Taking a car adds €20 to €25 depending on vehicle size, plus the driver's passenger ticket. Prices are confirmed seasonally.
Tickets: Purchased at the port ticket kiosks before departure. No advance online booking is available. Cash and cards accepted. For foot passengers, no reservation is needed. If you are bringing a car in August, aim to arrive at the port 30 to 45 minutes before your intended departure.
What to expect: A working boat, straightforward, no frills. You board, park if driving, walk up to the open deck, and 35 minutes later you are docking in Limenas.
In summer, the Keramoti to Limenas line is one of the most frequently served short-sea routes in northern Greece. Missing one crossing means waiting 30 minutes, not a day.

Alternative Ferry: Kavala to Skala Prinos
A second route connects the city of Kavala directly to Skala Prinos, on the western coast of Thassos. This is the better option if you are already in Kavala, want to explore the city before crossing, or are arriving without a car (Kavala has a city port within walking distance of the centre, unlike Keramoti).
Crossing time: approximately 75 minutes.
Frequency: Around 4 to 5 departures per day in summer. Significantly fewer than the Keramoti route.
Cost: Approximately €6.50 per adult, €4 per child (ages 5 to 10). Vehicle costs are similar to the Keramoti route (€20 to €25 for a car).
Tickets: Same system as Keramoti: purchased at port kiosks before departure. No advance online booking. Cash and cards accepted.
Operators: Both Thassos Ferries and Aneth Ferries serve this route.
The trade-off is clear: the crossing takes twice as long, departs far less often, costs slightly more, and Skala Prinos is further from Golden Beach than Limenas. For most guests heading to Aurea Mare, the Keramoti route is faster and simpler. But if your plans include time in Kavala, this route saves you the 35 km detour to Keramoti.

From the Port to Aurea Mare
If arriving at Limenas (from Keramoti): 20 minutes, 13 km.
Follow the coastal road south from Limenas (Thassos Town). The route curves through olive groves and briefly hugs the shoreline before arriving at Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia). No tolls. No complicated junctions. One road, one direction, and the sea on your left most of the way.
→ Limenas to Aurea Mare (Google Maps)
If arriving at Skala Prinos (from Kavala): approximately 35 to 40 minutes, 35 km.
From Skala Prinos, head east along the main island road through Limenas and then continue south to Golden Beach. The road is well-maintained and scenic. You cross the full northern width of the island.
